<li class="has-medium-font-size">Google and social media are great tools to find your closest team, spend time doing some research &#8211; get a feel for how busy the team is.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">Search social media feeds for posts about recruiting new team members &#8211; your local team may be actively recruiting.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">Contact the team through email and social media messaging &#8211; say who you are and tell them that you&#8217;d like to be a team member. Include a little information about the relevant skills and experience you already have. </li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">Wait. Teams are managed and administered by volunteers, it might take a while for them to respond to you.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">If you don&#8217;t hear anything after a few weeks, give the team a gentle nudge, remind them you&#8217;d like to join.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size">The team will reply &#8211; they will probably ask you to attend an initial, informal, meeting &#8211; or they may give you date for the next planned round of recruitment.</li>
</ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Joining a Mountain Rescue Team &#8211; The Process </h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Once you followed the steps above you&#8217;ll probably be invited to an informal meeting with a few team members, that meeting will be really friendly, you might chat about your motivation for joining, fitness and relevant skills and experience.<br><br>If you like the people you meet, and they like you, you&#8217;ll normally join the team as an &#8216;aspirant member&#8217;. <br><br>Aspirant team members attend training but do not attend &#8216;call outs&#8217;, being an aspirant is a chance to get to know the team &#8211; and for them to get to know you.<br><br>After a few months as an aspirant team member &#8211; if you like the team, and they like you, you will be invited to be become a &#8216;trainee team member&#8217;.<br><br>Trainee team members attend training and call outs, you&#8217;ll be issued some essential equipment and given access to a teams call out and team management systems.<br><br>While you&#8217;re a trainee most teams will expect you to attend a minimum number of training sessions and call outs &#8211; it can be quite a commitment.<br><br>After a significant period of time as a trainee, usually at least 12 months, and lots of training &#8211; you may be invited to become a full team member.<br><br>As a full team member your Mountain Rescue journey really gets started &#8211; more experience, more training, more time getting to know your team.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">Emma&#8217;s Top Tips &#8211; How to Predict a Cloud Inversion in the UK.</h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">There’s nothing quite like the thrill of climbing through the clag, only to break through to brilliant views of peaks rising as islands above a sea of clouds. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">This magical sight, called a cloud inversion, is rare but worth chasing. With the right knowledge, a bit of luck, and good planning, you can increase your chances of experiencing one in the UK. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Here’s what you need to know to predict a cloud inversion and enjoy this breathtaking phenomenon safely&#8230;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1647.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59416"/></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What Is a Cloud Inversion in the UK?</strong></h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A cloud inversion, also called a temperature inversion, happens when the usual weather pattern flips, with warmer air trapping cooler air below. In the UK, they often appear in valleys or near water sources during autumn, winter, and early spring.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">As the sun rises, moisture from lakes or rivers evaporates, cooling and condensing into mist. When the warm air layer above prevents it from rising, the mist thickens into a sea of cloud. Climbing above this layer reveals incredible views, with peaks breaking through the cloud like islands.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1645" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1820-scaled.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59423" srcset="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1820-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1820-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong>What’s the Best Weather to Predict a Cloud Inversion?</strong></strong></h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Cloud inversions occur when colder air near the ground is trapped under a layer of warmer air, often during high-pressure weather. This “temperature inversion” creates the perfect setup for mist and cloud to form below higher elevations.<br><br><strong>Key Weather Conditions for Cloud Inversions</strong></p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>High Pressure</strong>: Look for a long-lasting high-pressure system, which stabilizes the air and creates the calm conditions needed for inversions.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Cool Nights</strong>: Clear, cold nights allow the ground to cool quickly, encouraging the formation of mist and cloud.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Moist Ground</strong>: Recent rain or nearby lakes, rivers, or valleys can add moisture, increasing the chances of low clouds forming.</li>
</ol>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Check weather forecasts like MWIS (Mountain Weather Information Service) or the Met Office Mountain Forecast for predictions of inversion conditions, including the height of cloud layers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1660.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59417"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Round-Up: How to Predict a Cloud Inversion in the UK</strong></h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Check Weather Forecasts</strong>: Look for high pressure, calm conditions, and predicted cloud layers.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Focus on Moisture</strong>: Areas with rivers, lakes, or recent rain are ideal.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Choose Prominent Peaks</strong>: Get as high up as you can, if you&#8217;re in Wales aim for 3000ft peaks.</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Be Patient</strong>: It might take a few attempts, but the reward is worth it!</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><br><strong>Best Time of Day for a Cloud Inversion</strong></p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Cloud inversions are most common in the early morning, just after sunrise. Nights cool the air near the ground, creating ideal conditions for low cloud. Heading out before dawn increases your chances of catching the clouds before they burn off in the sun’s warmth.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1787-scaled.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59422" srcset="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1787-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1787-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Brocken Spectres and Cloud Inversions</strong></h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A real bonus when chasing cloud inversions is the chance to see a <em>Brocken Spectre</em>. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">This rare optical illusion happens when the sun casts your shadow onto the cloud below, creating a glowing, halo-like effect. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">It’s a magical sight that adds an extra thrill to your adventure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59418"/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Staying Safe in the Clouds Before a Cloud Inversion</strong></h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Hiking in foggy or cloudy conditions can be tricky, so it’s essential to stay safe:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Bring Navigation Tools</strong>: A map, compass, or GPS can help you stay on track in poor visibility.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Dress for the Weather</strong>: Wear layers and carry waterproofs, as conditions can change quickly.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Plan Your Route</strong>: Know the terrain and have an escape plan in case the weather turns.</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/DSC_1708.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59420"/></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">Emma&#8217;s Top Tips &#8211; What to Wear Wild Swimming.</h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Are you ready to jump into wild swimming but wondering what to wear? Wild swimming is getting more and more popular as a way to connect with the great outdoors and offers fantastic physical and mental health benefits.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Knowing what to wear can be tricky, especially with so many gear options.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">So we decided to put together a guide that covers everything from swimsuits to accessories.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-65-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59358" srcset="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-65-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-65-300x200.jpg 300w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-65-768x512.jpg 768w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-65-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-65-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What You Wear Wild Swimming</strong></h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Swimming outdoors, in wild places like rivers, lakes, or the sea, means you’ll be dealing with a variety of conditions &#8211; underfoot and in the water.<br><br>The water will be colder, there will be currents and you WILL encounter mud, rocks and plants. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Your choice of clothing should help you stay comfortable, warm, and safe &#8211; let’s look at some essentials.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-16-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59355" srcset="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-16-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-16-300x200.jpg 300w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-16-768x512.jpg 768w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-16-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-16-2048x1366.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Wild Swimwear</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Swimsuit or Wetsuit?</strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">One of the first things you’ll need to decide is whether to wear a swimsuit or a wetsuit. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Swimsuits</strong> &#8211; Perfect for warmer days, a one-piece swimsuit or swim shorts can be great options. They allow for easy movement, but they don&#8217;t provide any extra warmth. Bikinis are fine but make sure they’re robust and that you have both bits of your bikini with you.</li>
</ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Wetsuits</strong> &#8211; Ideal if you’re swimming in colder water or planning to stay in the water for longer. Wetsuits offer insulation, they help maintain your body temperature, </li>
</ul>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Wetsuits can restrict movement slightly. For colder months or colder waters, look for a wetsuit with a thickness of 2-3 mm for the best balance of warmth and flexibility.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Wild Swimming Accessories</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Swimming Cap (or wooly hat)</strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A swimming cap (or wooly hat) helps keep your body heat in, especially in chilly waters. A brightly coloured swim cap also increases your visibility, which can keep you a bit safer.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Swimming Shoes</strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">For rocky or uneven ground, swimming shoes protect your feet and provide extra grip. These can prevent cuts and make getting in and out of the water loads more comfortable.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tow Float</strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A tow float is a popular wild swimming accessory that can serve two purposes&#8230;</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">It increases your visibility in the water <strong>and</strong> acts as a waterproof storage bag for valuables like your phone or keys &#8211; keeping your phone close enough and DRY is important, especially in wild places.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-11-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59354" srcset="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-11-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-11-300x200.jpg 300w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-11-768x512.jpg 768w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-11-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-11-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Staying Warm </strong></h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Once you’re out of the water, it’s important to warm up quickly, these things can really help.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Towel or Changing Robe</strong>: A large towel or water-resistant changing robe makes drying off easier, and a changing robe can keep you warm while you move around and get changed.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Extra Layers</strong>: Socks, a hat, and gloves can help warm you up, even on a sunny day. Cold water can chill you more than expected, so bringing a few cozy layers is a good idea.</li>

<li class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>A Flask: </strong>Something warm to drink makes a difference to how quickly you’ll feel warm &#8211; it’s also a great way of getting some sugar on board.</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day3-27-1024x682.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59359" srcset="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day3-27-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day3-27-300x200.jpg 300w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day3-27-768x512.jpg 768w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day3-27-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day3-27-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Different Conditions</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Cold Tolerance and Personal Preference</strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Everyone’s tolerance for cold is different. Don’t feel pressured to &#8216;tough it out&#8217; if you get chilly easily.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A wetsuit, along with neoprene gloves and socks might be just what you need.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you feel more comfortable in a simple swimsuit, that’s fine too. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Focus on what makes YOU comfortable and don’t worry about what other people are wearing.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Consider the Type of Swim</strong></h4>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">For a quick dip, you might not need much gear beyond a swimsuit. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">But for longer swims, some extra insulation, like a wetsuit or thermal rash vest, can help. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you’re swimming during winter or colder days, consider gloves and socks to protect your hands and feet.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-31-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-59356" srcset="https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-31-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-31-300x200.jpg 300w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-31-768x512.jpg 768w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-31-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://explorewildwales.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WildWales-Retreat-Day2-31-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
