Wild Wales offers subsidised Mountain Leader Training Courses in North Wales during 2026.

• Spring – Monday 20th of April – Saturday 25th of April.
• Autumn – Monday 21st of September – Saturday 26th of September.
• Not more than £270 per candidate (normally £450+)
• Support before the course (days on the hill).
• A clear pathway towards assessment after the course.
• 12 spaces available on each course.
• Based in North West Wales – around Beddgelert.

Why Complete a Mountain Leader Training Course in 2026?

The Mountain Leader is one of the best ‘outdoor’ qualifications there is, it gives you the skills and accreditation to take groups of people into the mountains for single or multi-day hikes.

Mountain Leader courses are regulated by Ofqual.

• A Mountain Leader Training Course is brilliant for expanding personal skills
• A Mountain Leader Training Course is excellent for building personal confidence in the hills
• A Mountain Leader Training Course will, eventually, mean you can work in the mountains
• A Mountain Leader Training Course is part of a pathway to other qualifications
• Mountain Leaders currently get paid £160 – £240 for a day in the mountains

Mountain Leader Training – Before the Course.

We’re really help with anything you need to do before the course, here’s what you’ll need to have done before you attend a Mountain Leader Training Course.

• You must be at least 18 years old
• You should have at least a year’s worth of mountain walking experience
• You should have an interest in leading groups in the mountains
• You must be a member (club or individual) of a mountaineering council (BMC, Mountaineering Ireland, Mountaineering Scotland). Find out why this is required
• You must create an account and register for the Mountain Leader qualification (cost: £65)
• You must have recorded a minimum of 20 quality mountain days* (ideally these will be recorded on DLOG**)

*But we can help you with ALL of that stuff and it’s really easy.

What is a Quality Mountain Day?

A ‘Quality Mountain Day’ for a Mountain Leader should take place in mountainous terrain in the UK or Ireland. 

The quality element lies in things like the conditions experienced in terms of weather and terrain, the exploration of new areas, the landscape covered, the skills used and the physical and mental challenge involved.

The experience of a quality day should contribute to knowledge, personal development and skill acquisition.

All the following criteria should be fulfilled:

• The individual takes part in the planning and leadership
• An unfamiliar locality is explored.
• A mountain is ascended.
• Navigation skills are required.
• Knowledge is increased and relevant skills practised.
• Judgement and decision making is required.
• Five hours or more journey time.

These criteria mean that days as a course member under instruction, a member of a group practising skills, or days spent repeating familiar routes are very unlikely to meet the requirements of a quality day
