If you’re into hillwalking, scrambling or climbing in the UK, finding the right mid-layer can be tricky. You need something that’s warm, but not too warm. Breathable, but still protective. After trying out the Patagonia Nano Air Ulstraight Hoody, I think it ticks a lot of boxes for active days out in the British mountains. Here’s what I’ve found.

Why choose the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody for climbing and walking in the UK?

The Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody is designed for people on the move — literally. Whether you’re climbing in the Lakes, trekking in Snowdonia, or walking in the Cairngorms, it’s a very lightweight mid-layer that balances warmth and breathability really well.

It’s made with stretchy, weather-resistant fabric and 30% less insulation than the original Nano Air. This means it doesn’t trap too much heat, which is exactly what you want when hiking uphill or climbing routes that keep your heart rate up. Even in cooler UK weather, it helps regulate your temperature during activity.

You also get 75% more breathability compared to the original model. If you’re sweating on a climb or going fast up a ridge, this is a huge plus. It’s designed to keep you comfortable without needing to stop and layer up or down all the time.

Is the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody worth the money?

At around £140 (on offer) , the Nano Air Ultralight Hoody isn’t cheap. But if you’re regularly out in the hills or on mountain routes, it could be a good investment.

Build quality is high, and the minimalist design means fewer zips and features to go wrong. Patagonia also offers great aftercare, which adds peace of mind when spending this much on a jacket.

For people who want a versatile and durable midlayer for active use, I’d say yes — it’s worth it.

Where to get the best deal on a Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody in the UK?

Your best options for buying in the UK include:

Specialist outdoor retailers like Ellis Brigham, Cotswold Outdoor or Alpine Trek – always deals to be had.

Look out for seasonal sales or discounts on last year’s colours and models

Online gear retailers often run promotions, especially in autumn or early spring, so keep an eye out to save a bit of cash.

When to use a Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody in the UK

The Nano Air Ultralight Hoody works best as a mid-layer for active days, especially in:

Spring to autumn mountain walking

Cold-weather scrambling or climbing

Chilly mornings or breezy ridgelines

High-output activities where you’re moving fast and don’t want to overheat

It layers well over a base layer and under a shell if it’s raining or very windy.

When NOT to use a Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody in the UK

There are times when the Nano Air Uktralight Hoody isn’t the best option, such as:

Winter belaying or standing still on cold, exposed summits – it’s not warm enough on its own

Heavy rain or snow – it’s water-resistant, but not waterproof

Everyday use around town – it’s a technical piece and lacks handwarmer pockets

It’s a great piece of performance kit, but not designed for sitting around or harsh weather on its own.

FAQs About Why to Choose the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody for Climbing and Walking in the UK

Is the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody good for UK mountains?
Yes, it’s ideal for active use in the UK thanks to its breathability, fit, and ability to regulate warmth while you’re moving.

Is it warm enough for Scottish winter?
Not by itself — you’ll need a warmer insulated or belay jacket on top. It’s better suited for layering or milder days.

Can I use it in the rain?
Only in light drizzle or mist. For proper rain, wear a waterproof shell over it.

Is the Nano Air Ultralight Hoody good for climbing?
Yes. It’s got a slim fit, doesn’t bunch up under a harness, and the hood fits well under a helmet.

Does it pack down well?
It stuffs into its own chest pocket and has a loop for clipping to a harness or rucksack.

What’s the difference between the Nano Air and Nano Air Ultralight?
The Light version has less insulation and more breathability, making it better for high-output activities like climbing or fast hiking.

Final Thoughts

The Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody is a smart choice for UK mountain-goers who are often on the move. If you value breathability, simplicity, and active comfort, it’s well worth considering for your next layering upgrade. Just remember it’s not a winter belay jacket — but for everything else, it could quickly become your favourite mid-layer.

I wear it ALL of the time.

Hillwalking in the UK might not conjure images of blazing sunshine, but don’t let occasional grey skies catch you out. Whether you’re stomping up Fells in the Lake District or exploring the massive expanse of the Scottish Highlands, sunscreen is as essential as your trusty boots and a well-stocked rucksack.

The UK’s unpredictable weather can lull you into a false sense of security, but UV rays don’t take a day off just because the sun isn’t shining…

Why Suncream Matters for UK Hillwalking

Even on overcast days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate the clouds, meaning your skin is still at risk of damage. As you climb higher, the risk increases – UV exposure rises by approximately 10 -12% for every 1,000 metres of elevation.

Add in the wind and cooler temperatures, which can mask the sensation of burning, and you might not realise you’re getting sunburnt until it’s too late.

Long-term exposure to UV rays can lead to premature ageing, sunspots, and, more seriously, an increased risk of skin cancer. For hillwalkers and mountaineers, who often spend hours exposed to the elements, sun protection isn’t just a luxury – it’s essential.

What SPF Should You Use in the UK Mountains?

Dermatologists recommend using at least SPF 30 for extended outdoor activities.

However, for hillwalking in the UK, especially during summer or on cold clear winter days, SPF 50 is a much better choice.

Basically the stronger protection the better when your outside all day long.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Hillwalking

When selecting a sunscreen for the hills, keep these things in mind:

Broad-Spectrum Protection: Ensure it guards against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

Water Resistance: Opt for a formula that can withstand moisture, as you’ll inevitably work up a sweat on those steep ascents.

Lightweight and Non-Greasy: A heavy, sticky sunscreen can feel uncomfortable during long walks. Look for a lightweight formula that won’t clog your pores.

Easy to Reapply: Sunscreen sticks or sprays are handy for quick top-ups ‘on the go’.

What Happens If You Don’t Use Suncream?

Skipping sunscreen while hillwalking in the UK isn’t just a ‘bit risky’ – it can have serious consequences. UV exposure can lead to:

Painful sunburn, even on cloudy days.

Long-term skin damage, including premature ageing and sunspots.

An increased risk of skin cancer from repeated exposure.

Dehydration and heat exhaustion in sunny conditions.

In short, sun protection isn’t just about comfort – it’s about keeping you safe. Skin cancer is shit.

Camping in the UK’s mountains is an excellent way to have an adventure. From the glorious mountains of Eryri to remote corners of the Scottish Highlands, the scenery and landscape are glorious – but the weather is pretty much always unpredictable.

One moment, you’re basking in sunshine; the next, you’re battling the wind and a sudden downpour. That’s why your sleeping bag is a really important piece of gear. It’s not just about being comfortable, it’s about staying warm, dry, and safe while you’re in the mountains.

A crap nights sleep means you’ll be less switched on the next day, which makes things more dangerous.

In this guide, we’ll break down what you need to know to choose the best sleeping bag for mountain camping in the UK during spring, summer, and autumn.

Let’s dive in…

Why Your Sleeping Bag Matters

When you’re camping in the mountains, temperatures can plummet fast, even in summer. A good sleeping bag isn’t just a luxury it’s one of the most important tools to keep you safe on multi day trips.

There are LOTS of sleeping bag options out there, how do you pick the right one? Let’s start with the basics.

Mummy vs. Rectangular: Which Shape is Best for Mountain Camping?

Sleeping bags come in two main shapes: mummy and rectangular.

Mummy-shaped sleeping bags are tapered, snug, and designed to hug your body. They’re lightweight, compact, and excel at trapping heat – perfect for chilly mountain nights.

Rectangular sleeping bags are roomier and more comfortable for those who like to move around, but they’re not amazing at retaining heat.

For UK mountain camping, a mummy-shaped sleeping bag with a hood is your best bet. It’ll keep you warm and cozy, even when the temperature drops.

Down vs. Synthetic Insulation: What’s Best for the UK?

The insulation in your sleeping bag determines how warm it keeps you and how well it handles damp conditions. Here’s the lowdown…

Down insulation (made from goose or duck feathers) is lightweight, ultra-warm, and packs down small. However, it loses its insulating power when wet and is a pain in the bum to dry out.

Synthetic insulation is slightly bulkier and heavier, but it performs much better in damp conditions and dries faster. Synthetic sleeping bags are also, generally cheaper.

Verdict: For UK mountain camping, where rain is always a possibility, a synthetic sleeping bag is ideal. It offers the best balance of warmth, weight, and weather resistance. If you’re planning on camping out in the Winter it’s defo worth thinking about a down sleeping bag.

But for Spring, Summer and Autumn a high-quality synthetic bag is brilliant.

Temperature Ratings: How to Stay Warm in Every Season

Sleeping bags come with temperature ratings to help you choose the right one for the conditions. Here’s what you need to know:

Summer (above 5°C): A two-season sleeping bag is sufficient.

Spring and Autumn (0°C to 5°C): Opt for a three-season sleeping bag.

Winter (below 0°C): A four-season sleeping bag with a comfort rating of at least -5°C is essential.

Pro Tip: Always check the Comfort Rating – this tells you the lowest temperature at which you’ll sleep comfortably. Don’t rely on the “Extreme Rating,” which is the survival limit, not the comfort zone.

Emma’s top tip – even comfort ratings should be considered on the ‘optimistic’ end of things. Some people sleep cold, if that’s you – buy a warmer sleeping bag.

Don’t Forget Your Sleeping Mat!

Your sleeping bag is only as good as the mat beneath it. A good sleeping mat is essential, it insulates you from the cold ground and adds a layer of comfort. Here’s what to look for:

Foam mats: Affordable and durable but bulky.

Inflatable mats: Lightweight and comfortable but prone to punctures.

Self-inflating mats: A great middle ground—comfortable, warm, and durable.

For UK mountain camping, choose a mat with an R-value of at least 3 to ensure proper insulation.

How Much Should You Spend on a Sleeping Bag?

The cost of a sleeping bag depends on its insulation type, brand, and features.

Air it out after every trip to prevent mould and odours.

Use a sleeping bag liner to keep it clean and add extra warmth.

Taking your dog into the mountains is an absolutely wonderful thing to do – There’s space to roam in the hills and absolutely loads of opportunities for adventure.

Good preparation and planning is really important to your dog safe, happy, and healthy during your mountain adventures.

We’ve been walking in the mountains with our dogs for years, it’s probably our favourite thing.

We’re pretty sure it keeps our dogs happy and healthy – they’re defo determined to get in the car once they see us packing for a day on the hill.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your days in the hills together.

Preparing Your Dog for Mountain Adventures

Before climbing into the hills, it’s important to be honest about your dog’s fitness, temperament, and experience with mixed terrain.

Not all dogs are built for mountain days, so it’s essential to make your plans based on what your dog can manage in a day.

As Brease got older we realised that he didn’t want to cope with massive mountain days every day of the week.

What worked for him was the occasional bigger day and a few 3 hour ‘mini adventures’ each week.

A mini adventure, dinner, then hours on the sofa in front of the wood burner was Brease’s idea of heaven.

So, basically – be really thoughtful about what your dog actually wants to do. Boundless energy and enthusiasm at the START of every walk does NOT mean your dog loves massive days in the mountains every single day.

Training and Fitness

Build Endurance and Fitness Gradually: Start with shorter walks on uneven terrain and slowly increase the distance and difficulty. This helps your dog build stamina and get used to mountain conditions.

Recall Training: A reliable recall is crucial, especially in open areas where your dog might be tempted to explore places you do not want them to be.

Exposure to Different Terrain: Let your dog get used to walking on rocky, uneven, steep and slippery surfaces to build their confidence – Bear has refused to come with us down a slope before, and that was a RIGHT pain the bum.

Health Checks for Dogs BEFORE Mountain Adventures

Ask Your Vet: If there’s ANY doubt, before heading out for a day in the mountains ask your vet if they think your dog is fit for the activity. This is especially important for older dogs, that can sometimes ‘go all day’ but feel sore afterwards.

Vaccinations and Parasite Protection: Ensure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date and consider flea, tick, and worm treatments, these pests can be more common in the great outdoors.

Hiking with Dogs in the UK: Year-Round Tips

The UK’s mountains offer a massive mix of terrain and conditions, so it’s important to be prepared for anything. Here are some key considerations for mountain days with your dog:

Mountain Hazards for Dogs

Steep Slopes and Scrambles: Loose rocks or steep climbs can be challenging for dogs. Avoid routes with technical sections unless your dog is experienced and capable.

Heat and Dehydration: In summer, dogs can overheat quickly. Watch for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, take lots of extra water.

Wildlife and Livestock: Keep your dog under control to avoid disturbing wildlife or livestock, have a lead to hand – if in doubt put your dog on the lead.

Ticks and Adders: Ticks are common in grassy areas, and adders can be found in some areas. Check your dog regularly for ticks and be cautious in areas where adders might be present – adders can, and do, kill dogs.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring and Summer: Be thoughtful about warmer temperatures and bring plenty of water for your dog, take breaks and plan for spots they can get into water along the way.

Autumn: Cooler weather makes for ideal hiking conditions, but be prepared for rain and muddy paths.

Winter: If you do venture out in colder months, ensure your dog is equipped with a coat and paw protection, and avoid icy or hazardous routes. Unless your dog is Bear – who will, apparently, still act like it’s too hot when it’s -10 degrees…

Essential Gear for Mountain Walking with Dogs

Having the right equipment can make your mountain day safer and loads more enjoyable for your dog. Here’s what to pack…

Harness and Lead: A decent dog harness gives you more control, especially on steep or uneven terrain. A long lead can be useful in open areas.

Collapsible Water Bowl and Water: Hydration is crucial, especially on warm days. Bring more water than you think you’ll need.

Dog Backpack: If your dog is fit and healthy, a backpack allows them to carry their own supplies, like food and water.

Paw Protection: Dog boots or paw wax can protect your dog’s paws from sharp rocks, hot surfaces, ice or rough terrain.

First Aid Kit: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, tick twizzler along with any medications your dog might need.

High-Energy Snacks: Bring extra food to keep your dog’s energy levels up.

Poop Bags and Trowel: Always clean up after your dog and follow Leave No Trace principles.

Finding the right photographer is HARD!

Adventure photography is not just about taking pictures; it’s about capturing human moments in a uncontrolled and ever changing environment.

A great adventure photographer is absolutely comfortable in the landscape – someone who can get themselves into the right place at exactly the right time, no matter where that place is.

Hollie Harmsworth is an expert in this field, combining her passion for adventure with her skills in storytelling through photography.

But how do YOU choose the best adventure photographer for what you need?

How to Choose an Adventure Photographer

Choosing an adventure photographer requires more thought than simply picking someone with a camera. Here are the key factors to consider:

1. Experience in Adventure Photography

Not all photographers can handle the challenges of shooting in harsh conditions. Look for someone like Hollie Harmsworth, who has loads of experience capturing photo and video in the great outdoors.

2. A Great Portfolio of Real Adventure Photography

Check their website and social media to see if they have worked in remote, wild areas, not just styled shoots. Adventure photography demands real skill in capturing natural lighting, movement, and amazing backdrops.

3. Outdoor Knowledge and Equipment

An adventure photographer should be comfortable in different outdoor settings and know how to navigate the landscape. They MUST also have high-quality gear that can handle different weather conditions.

4. A Style You Love

Every photographer has a unique style. Look at their past work and decide if their use of lighting, color, and composition matches what you envision for your photos.

Why Are Adventure Photographers Different from ‘Normal’ Photographers?

Adventure photographers specialise in capturing amazing photo and video in wild, natural environments. Unlike lots of photographers who shoot in controlled settings, adventure photographers must adapt to changing weather, lighting, and landscapes.

Hollie Harmsworth, for example, knows how to work with unpredictable outdoor conditions while ensuring every moment is beautifully documented.

How to Get the Best Value from an Adventure Photographer

Plan Ahead: Book your photographer early to secure your preferred date and location.

Communicate Your Vision: Discuss your expectations, desired locations, and photography style in advance.

Consider a Multi-Day Shoot: more time means more locations and more output, don’t try and squeeze everything into a single day.

Trust Their Expertise: Experienced photographers like Hollie Harmsworth know how to make the most of any environment, so be open to their suggestions.

Walking boots should be your best friend when exploring the mountain landscapes of the UK. From the grand, lonely, hills of the Scottish Highlands to boggy days on Dartmoor, your boots can take a hammering.

To keep them in good shape and make them last as long as possible, regular and effective care is essential.

In this guide, we’ll explain why cleaning and reproofing your boots is important, how to do it effectively, and the best products to use.

Emma’s top tips at the end of the blog…

Why Clean Your Walking Boots so Often?

Walking boots face tough conditions in the UK, from muddy trails to acidic soils. Here’s why keeping them clean is so important…

Prevents Material Damage: Mud, grit, and acidic soil can break down leather and fabric over time.

Maintains Waterproofing: Dirt can clog waterproof membranes, making your boots breath less effectively.

Extends Lifespan: Well-maintained boots last longer, saving you money over time.

Keeps Boots Comfortable: Clean boots stay breathable and warm – so your feet stay happy on long days out.

How to Clean Your Walking Boots

Step 1: Rinse After Every Walk

After each day out, give your boots a thorough rinse with water, if you have a boot brush outside somewhere – even better. This is especially important in areas like Scotland, North Wales or the Peak District, where acidic soils can harm the leather and stitching.

Step 2: Scrub Off Dirt and Mud

Use warm water and a stiff brush to remove mud and debris. Avoid detergents, as they can strip natural oils from the leather. For a deeper clean, try a specialist cleaner like Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel.

Step 3: Dry Them Slowly

Let your boots dry at room temperature. Never place them near direct heat sources like radiators or fires, as this can crack the leather and damage the waterproof lining. If they’re soaking wet, stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture.

Re-Waterproof Your Walking Boots

Waterproofing wears off over time, leaving your boots vulnerable to water. Here’s how to restore their water resistance:

Step 1: Choose the Right Product

For Leather Boots: Use a wax-based product like Grangers Waterproofing Wax or Meindl Sportwax

For Suede or Nubuck Boots: Opt for a spray or sponge-on solution like Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proofer.

Step 2: Apply the Waterproofing Treatment

For Waxes: Use a brush or your fingers to apply the wax evenly, focusing on flex points to prevent cracking.

For Spray and Sponge Applicators : use evenly, all over the boot, ensuring full coverage.

Step 3: Let Them Dry

Allow the product to soak in completely before wearing your boots again. Wipe off any excess to avoid buildup.

Why Acidic Soil is a Problem for Walking Boots

In many UK mountain regions, especially those with peat bogs, the soil is highly acidic. This can damage stitching and break down waterproof membranes over time. Rinsing your boots after every walk helps remove acidic residues and prolongs their life.

FAQs About Walking Boot Care

How often should I clean my walking boots?

Ideally, after every walk, especially if they’re muddy or wet.

How do I dry wet walking boots?

Let them air dry naturally at room temperature. Stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture, and avoid direct heat.

Can I put my walking boots in the washing machine?

No, this can damage the waterproof lining and weaken the boot’s structure.

How often should I reproof my boots?

Every month or so, or when water stops beading on the surface.

Emma’s Top Tips – Caring for Walking Boots in North Wales

It’s not always practical to clean my boots every time I use them.

BUT – I do always rinse them well if they’ve been immersed in ‘peat sludge’ or touched salt water.

I find that, if I leave my boots out on the Kitchen table, they magically clean themselves. That probably happens once a week.

I’m told that cleaning involves a good scrub with some Nikwax cleaning gel and then a sponge (while they’re still wet) with Nikwax fabric and leather proof.

West Coast Special

There are many glorious mountains in North Wales. Some are pointy, some are broad backed, some have hard edges and some climb gently.

The mountains in North Wales vary wildly in terms of the amount of people that visit them.

Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) sees 600,000 people walk up it’s flanks each year.

In contrast, you can explore the West Coast mountains on a sunny Saturday and not see another soul.

Our favourite mountains might not be your favourite mountains, that’s what so wonderful about humans – we all think a bit differently.

This list is in no particular order, they’re all brilliant mountains.

Moelwyn Mawr

Great White Hill

Moelwyn Mawr is a glorious ‘humpback whale of a mountain’ that rears up above the West coast of North Wales, it’s part of the Moelwynion.

We love Moelwyn Mawr because, for us, it’s close to home, there’s loads of great routes up to the summit and there’s plenty to explore whichever way you go.

There’s lots of history within this landscape, the remains of quarry works are stark and everywhere.

The skylarks are resentful and noisy if you come up from the West.

You can even swim inside the mountain if you know how – probably best to contact us about that though.

You can start a walk up Moelwyn Mawr from Croesor or Tanygrisiau – both are excellent.

Mountain of the Red Rock

The circular route to the top of Mynydd Graig Goch might just be our ‘most walked walk’ in North Wales.

Mynydd Graig Goch marks the Western end of Nantlle Ridge, it’s slopes look down over the Llyn Peninsula, Ynys Mon and the Irish Sea.

If you take it slow the circular walk takes two and a half hours, we’ve done it in an hour and twenty minutes at a fast walk – the gradient is excellent (both up and down) and the terrain is mixed.

There’s a broad grassy plateau with amazing views on both sides and a craggy summit that’s marked by tors and boulder fields that cuts the plateau from its Western slope.

We call this hill ‘Flagpole’, one of the tors is surmounted by a length of scaffold pole that normally holds a ragged Welsh flag.

Moel Hebog

Bare Hill of the Hawk

Moel Hebog looms over Beddgelert like the lonely mountain over Lake Town.

It’s a great lump of a hill that climbs 750 meters from the valley below.

Don’t walk up the West side of Moel Hebog, it’s a long grassy slog of a slope that can feel endless when your on it.

Start in Beddgelert and head up the steeper North East Ridge, it has much more of a mix of terrain and topography. The ground gets steeper at about 400 meters and the walk gets interesting, you’ll have to use your hands every now and again and think about the route ahead.

For a longer day, head up Moel yr Ogof and Moel lefn as well.

The ‘Welsh Matterhorn’ Another mountain with lots of quick routes to the summit.

If you start from Croesor you can be up and down Cnicht in 2 hours without trying too hard.

The last 80 meters of height gain are steep and craggy, it’s not quite a scramble but you’ll need to use your hands as you climb.

From the West Cnicht is really pointy (hence – ‘The Welsh Matterhorn’), The long, broad, Eastern ridge gives access to Moelwyn Mawr and Moel Druman.

Cnicht is surrounded by the legacy of the quarries, it’s a beautiful mountain that gets popular at the weekend – probably best to save it for a midweek day.

A wild, steep, craggy glacial valley that head up onto the highest part of the Nantlle Ridge.

There’s lots of routes onto the wide plateau of Craig Cwm Silyn but our favourite is a circular walk that starts West of Nebo and takes about 3 hours.

The first 3km are great for getting warmed up and the crag looms above you broken by gully and shadow.

There are some routes up those gullys, but you’ll need to be really confident and careful.

A less consequential route clambers to the Bwlch and then climbs a steep ridge section to reach the summit cairns.

Head off towards the West and loop back to the car.

GREAT views of the Yr Wyddfa massif.

When it comes to walking in the hills, especially on broken ground, trekking poles have become standard issue for loads of people.

We think that trekking poles definitely help with stability, especially when we’re carrying a heavy load on our backs.

But do they really make a difference to how much energy we use and how much pressure hits our knees?

Let’s delve into the research and practicality of using trekking poles, particularly when tackling steeper climbs in the mountains.

Do Trekking Poles Save Energy?

The Science Behind Trekking Poles

Nicola Giovanelli, a mountain runner, coach, and sports science professor at the University of Udine, has conducted extensive research on the use of trekking poles.

His studies, published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, reveal some real insights.

Giovanelli’s research involved rigging a treadmill to climb at angles of up to 45 degrees, equipped with force-sensitive poles and insoles to measure the impact of using poles on uphill climbs. The results were really interesting.

While trekking poles don’t necessarily save energy, they do help you climb faster and reduce the strain on your legs.

Key Findings from the Study

Skill Factor: The effectiveness of poles depends on how actively you use them. Using poles ‘passively’ won’t provide lots of benefits.

Increased Speed: Using poles can make you 2.5 percent faster on steep inclines.

Reduced Leg Strain: Poles help shift some of the load from your legs to your arms, reducing the force exerted by your legs by about 5 percent.

Practical Benefits of Trekking Poles

Real-World Applications

While treadmill tests provide controlled conditions, real-world hiking is a different ball game. Outdoor tests showed that even on irregular surfaces, the benefits of using poles persist.

The need to place poles and feet accurately adds a layer of complexity, but the overall trend remains: poles help you climb faster and reduce leg strain.

Versatility on Different Terrains

Steep Uphills: Poles are particularly beneficial on steep ascents, helping you maintain speed and reduce leg fatigue.

Level and Undulating Trails: The benefits are less pronounced but still present. Poles can provide stability and reduce the risk of falls.

Downhill Trails: Poles can help absorb impact, reducing strain on your knees and joints.

Why European Runners Swear by Trekking Poles

Cultural Differences Using Poles

There’s a longstanding cliché in mountain trail running: European runners are more willing to use poles and tend to outperform on the toughest courses compared to their North American counterparts who are more hesitant.

This cultural difference highlights the practical benefits of poles, especially on challenging terrains.

Making the Case for Trekking Poles

If you’re planning a mountain walk with long, steep ascents, or if you’re venturing into rugged, uneven ground, trekking poles can be a game-changer.

They not only help you climb faster but also reduce the strain on your legs, making your hike more enjoyable and less taxing.

Conclusion: Should You Use Trekking Poles?

The evidence is pretty clear – trekking poles offer real benefits, particularly on steep uphill climbs.

They help you climb faster, reduce leg strain, and provide stability on uneven terrain.

While they may not save energy, the shift in load from your legs to your arms can make a world of difference, especially on long climbs.

You probably should be using trekking poles if you’re walking in the mountains often, especially if you’re carrying heavy loads or travelling over uneven ground.

If you’re carrying very heavy bags as part of a Search and Rescue team you should definitely be using poles.

What Owen and Emma think about Walking Poles

We haven’t been using walking poles for very long.

We’re not sure why we didn’t start using them sooner.

Emma started using poles a few years ago – “I got them for my Mountain Leader assessment, and just kept using them”.

She mostly likes them for carrying a pack and heading downhill.

Owen started using poles this year after a physio told him he needed to “be more upright”.

We think walking poles are pretty good for posture, stability and speed.

If you’re carrying a heavy pack they’re probably really important.

We don’t think that walking poles take much ‘pressure off your knees’ – that’s doesn’t seem logical and there’s no research to back it up.

Walking poles are great to carry in case of a minor lower limb injury – they might make the difference, allowing you to walk off the hill.

Emma uses LEKI Makalu FX Carbon poles, because she is graceful and nimble – they cost about £145 for a pair.

Owen uses LEKI Sherpa FX One Carbon poles – because he is an oaf – the cost about £125 for a pair.
