If you’re into hillwalking, scrambling or climbing in the UK, finding the right mid-layer can be tricky. You need something that’s warm, but not too warm. Breathable, but still protective. After trying out the Patagonia Nano Air Ulstraight Hoody, I think it ticks a lot of boxes for active days out in the British mountains. Here’s what I’ve found.

Why choose the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody for climbing and walking in the UK?

The Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody is designed for people on the move — literally. Whether you’re climbing in the Lakes, trekking in Snowdonia, or walking in the Cairngorms, it’s a very lightweight mid-layer that balances warmth and breathability really well.

It’s made with stretchy, weather-resistant fabric and 30% less insulation than the original Nano Air. This means it doesn’t trap too much heat, which is exactly what you want when hiking uphill or climbing routes that keep your heart rate up. Even in cooler UK weather, it helps regulate your temperature during activity.

You also get 75% more breathability compared to the original model. If you’re sweating on a climb or going fast up a ridge, this is a huge plus. It’s designed to keep you comfortable without needing to stop and layer up or down all the time.

Is the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody worth the money?

At around £140 (on offer) , the Nano Air Ultralight Hoody isn’t cheap. But if you’re regularly out in the hills or on mountain routes, it could be a good investment.

Build quality is high, and the minimalist design means fewer zips and features to go wrong. Patagonia also offers great aftercare, which adds peace of mind when spending this much on a jacket.

For people who want a versatile and durable midlayer for active use, I’d say yes — it’s worth it.

Where to get the best deal on a Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody in the UK?

Your best options for buying in the UK include:

Patagonia’s official UK website – best for warranty, returns and ‘Pro Accounts’

Specialist outdoor retailers like Ellis Brigham, Cotswold Outdoor or Alpine Trek – always deals to be had.

Look out for seasonal sales or discounts on last year’s colours and models

Online gear retailers often run promotions, especially in autumn or early spring, so keep an eye out to save a bit of cash.

When to use a Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody in the UK

The Nano Air Ultralight Hoody works best as a mid-layer for active days, especially in:

Spring to autumn mountain walking

Cold-weather scrambling or climbing

Chilly mornings or breezy ridgelines

High-output activities where you’re moving fast and don’t want to overheat

It layers well over a base layer and under a shell if it’s raining or very windy.

When NOT to use a Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody in the UK

There are times when the Nano Air Uktralight Hoody isn’t the best option, such as:

Winter belaying or standing still on cold, exposed summits – it’s not warm enough on its own

Heavy rain or snow – it’s water-resistant, but not waterproof

Everyday use around town – it’s a technical piece and lacks handwarmer pockets

It’s a great piece of performance kit, but not designed for sitting around or harsh weather on its own.

FAQs About Why to Choose the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody for Climbing and Walking in the UK

Is the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody good for UK mountains?
Yes, it’s ideal for active use in the UK thanks to its breathability, fit, and ability to regulate warmth while you’re moving.

Is it warm enough for Scottish winter?
Not by itself — you’ll need a warmer insulated or belay jacket on top. It’s better suited for layering or milder days.

Can I use it in the rain?
Only in light drizzle or mist. For proper rain, wear a waterproof shell over it.

Is the Nano Air Ultralight Hoody good for climbing?
Yes. It’s got a slim fit, doesn’t bunch up under a harness, and the hood fits well under a helmet.

Does it pack down well?
It stuffs into its own chest pocket and has a loop for clipping to a harness or rucksack.

What’s the difference between the Nano Air and Nano Air Ultralight?
The Light version has less insulation and more breathability, making it better for high-output activities like climbing or fast hiking.

Final Thoughts

The Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight Hoody is a smart choice for UK mountain-goers who are often on the move. If you value breathability, simplicity, and active comfort, it’s well worth considering for your next layering upgrade. Just remember it’s not a winter belay jacket — but for everything else, it could quickly become your favourite mid-layer.

I wear it ALL of the time.

Hillwalking in the UK might not conjure images of blazing sunshine, but don’t let occasional grey skies catch you out. Whether you’re stomping up Fells in the Lake District or exploring the massive expanse of the Scottish Highlands, sunscreen is as essential as your trusty boots and a well-stocked rucksack.

The UK’s unpredictable weather can lull you into a false sense of security, but UV rays don’t take a day off just because the sun isn’t shining…

Why Suncream Matters for UK Hillwalking

Even on overcast days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate the clouds, meaning your skin is still at risk of damage. As you climb higher, the risk increases – UV exposure rises by approximately 10 -12% for every 1,000 metres of elevation.

Add in the wind and cooler temperatures, which can mask the sensation of burning, and you might not realise you’re getting sunburnt until it’s too late.

Long-term exposure to UV rays can lead to premature ageing, sunspots, and, more seriously, an increased risk of skin cancer. For hillwalkers and mountaineers, who often spend hours exposed to the elements, sun protection isn’t just a luxury – it’s essential.

What SPF Should You Use in the UK Mountains?

Dermatologists recommend using at least SPF 30 for extended outdoor activities.

However, for hillwalking in the UK, especially during summer or on cold clear winter days, SPF 50 is a much better choice.

Basically the stronger protection the better when your outside all day long.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Hillwalking

When selecting a sunscreen for the hills, keep these things in mind:

Broad-Spectrum Protection: Ensure it guards against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

Water Resistance: Opt for a formula that can withstand moisture, as you’ll inevitably work up a sweat on those steep ascents.

Lightweight and Non-Greasy: A heavy, sticky sunscreen can feel uncomfortable during long walks. Look for a lightweight formula that won’t clog your pores.

Easy to Reapply: Sunscreen sticks or sprays are handy for quick top-ups ‘on the go’.

What Happens If You Don’t Use Suncream?

Skipping sunscreen while hillwalking in the UK isn’t just a ‘bit risky’ – it can have serious consequences. UV exposure can lead to:

Painful sunburn, even on cloudy days.

Long-term skin damage, including premature ageing and sunspots.

An increased risk of skin cancer from repeated exposure.

Dehydration and heat exhaustion in sunny conditions.

In short, sun protection isn’t just about comfort – it’s about keeping you safe. Skin cancer is shit.

FAQs About Suncream for Hillwalking in the UK

Do I need suncream on cloudy days?
Absolutely. Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds, so you’re still at risk of sunburn even when it’s overcast.

How often should I reapply sunscreen?
Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you’re sweating heavily.

Can I just wear a hat instead of sunscreen?
A hat helps, but it’s not enough on its own. UV rays can reflect off surfaces like snow, water, or even grass, reaching your skin from different angles.

Is SPF 30 enough for hillwalking?
SPF 30 is the minimum recommendation, but SPF 50 is better, especially at higher altitudes or during summer.

What’s the best sunscreen for sweaty hikes?
Ultrasun Sports Gel SPF 50, Altruist Sunscreen SPF 50, P20 Once a Day SPF 50 are all designed to withstand sweat and intense activity.

Using sunscreen while hillwalking in the UK isn’t just a good idea, it’s absolutely essential. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can cause significant damage to your skin.

Opt for a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen like Altruist SPF 50, reapply regularly, and don’t forget to pair it with protective clothing, sunglasses, and a decent hat.

By taking these simple precautions, you can focus on enjoying the excellent hills and mountains, knowing your skin is well protected.

Stay safe, stay protected, and happy hillwalking…

Down and synthetic insulated jackets both have their strengths and weaknesses, knowing when and where to use each one can make all the difference.

In this blog, we’ll try and break down the pros and cons of these jackets and help you decide which is the best fit for your outdoor adventures.

Are Down Jackets Appropriate for Use in the UK?

Down jackets are known for their superior warmth and lightweight design. Filled with soft, fluffy feathers from ducks or geese, they excel in trapping body heat and keeping you warm in cold, dry conditions. However, the UK’s often wet climate presents a challenge for down jackets.

When is it Best to Use a Down Jacket?

Down jackets are perfect for:

Cold, dry weather: They’re excellent for frosty mornings or snow-covered peaks.

Low-intensity activities: Ideal for times when you’re not generating much body heat, like camping or resting during a hike.

Packability: If space is limited, down jackets compress easily and take up minimal room in your pack.

That said, down struggles in wet conditions. When exposed to moisture, the feathers can clump, losing their insulating properties. To counter this, some down jackets feature hydrophobic treatments, but they still aren’t fully waterproof. If heavy rain is likely, carrying a waterproof shell is essential.

Are Synthetic Insulation Jackets Best to Use in the UK?

Synthetic insulation jackets are made from man-made fibers designed to mimic the insulating properties of down. They’re an excellent choice for the UK’s damp and unpredictable weather.

When is it Best to Use a Synthetic Insulation Jacket?

Synthetic jackets shine in:

Wet conditions: Synthetic fibers retain their warmth even when damp and dry much faster than down.

High-intensity activities: They’re breathable and handle sweat better, making them great for skiing, climbing, or fast-paced hikes.

Affordability and ease of care: Generally cheaper and easier to clean than down, they’re a practical choice for frequent use.

However, synthetic jackets are usually bulkier and heavier than down for the same level of warmth. They may not be as warm for their weight, but the trade-off is their resilience in wet weather.

What Are the Best Features of Down Jackets?

Exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio: Lightweight yet incredibly warm.

Highly packable: Compresses easily for travel or storage.

Durability: With proper care, down jackets can last for decades.

Natural material: Many outdoor brands ethically source down as a byproduct of the food industry.

What Are the drawbacks of Down Jackets?

Special care required: Cleaning and maintaining a down jacket requires extra effort.

Moisture sensitivity: Poor performance when wet unless treated with hydrophobic coatings.

Higher cost: Down jackets tend to be pricier than synthetic options.

What Are the Best Features of Synthetic Insulation Jackets?

Wet weather performance: Maintains insulation even when damp.

Fast drying: Ideal for the UK’s frequent rain showers.

Breathability: Great for high-energy activities where sweat is a factor.

Lower cost: A budget-friendly alternative to down.

Easy maintenance: Simpler to clean and care for.

What Are the Drawbacks of Synthetic Insulation Jackets?

Shorter lifespan: Synthetic insulation may degrade faster over time.

Heavier and bulkier: Less warmth for the same weight compared to down.

FAQs About Choosing a Down Jacket or a Synthetic Insulation Jacket

Q: Can I wear a down jacket in the rain?

A: Down jackets aren’t ideal for heavy rain. If you expect wet weather, pair your down jacket with a waterproof shell.

Q: Are synthetic jackets as warm as down?

A: Synthetic jackets can’t match down’s warmth-to-weight ratio but are still warm enough for most UK conditions, especially during high-energy activities.

Q: When should I choose a down jacket over synthetic?

A: Choose down for cold, dry conditions and when packability and lightweight warmth are priorities.

Q: When should I choose a synthetic jacket over down?

A: Opt for synthetic insulation for wet or damp conditions and high-intensity activities where breathability matters.

Q: How do I care for my jacket?

A: Follow the care label instructions. Down jackets need specialized cleaning products, while synthetic jackets are typically machine washable.

Choosing between a down or synthetic jacket depends on the weather and your planned activities. With the information above, you’re better equipped to make the right choice for your next mountain adventure.

Understanding Quality Mountain Days (QMDs)

If you’re working towards the Mountain Leader Award, you’ve likely come across the term ‘Quality Mountain Day’ (QMD). But what actually is a QMD?

That question often prompts weird and wonderful discussion, especially amongst ‘more experienced’ mountain leaders – understanding the (updated) criteria is really important for aspiring Mountain Leaders.

In simple terms, a Quality Mountain Day is a full day spent in mountainous terrain, that fulfils specific criteria that help develop your skills and experience as a Mountain Leader.

Sounds a bit tedious, but – that definition is important.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re exploring a completely new area or working on your navigation all day long, new experience is integral to your progress as an aspirant Mountain Leader.

The Criteria for a Quality Mountain Day

To meet the standards of a QMD, your day must satisfy all seven of the following criteria:

Source: https://www.mountain-training.org/help/frequently-asked-questions/what-is-a-quality-day/

1. Planning and Leadership

You must take an active role in planning and leading the day. This includes choosing the route, preparing for potential challenges, and making decisions as the day unfolds. Being part of a led group does not count.

2. Exploring Unfamiliar Terrain

Your chosen route should take you into an area you haven’t explored before. Familiarity with the location may detract from the overall learning experience. An entirely new area, a new mountain, a new distinct route up a hill.

3. Mountain Ascent

The day should include ascending at least one mountain.

4. Navigation Skills

The route must challenge and improve your navigation abilities. Get used to using a paper map, compass, GPS, and your phone – on their own and in partnership. Maps get blown away, phones get damaged or run out of battery – have options. Navigating effectively is central to being a Mountain Leader.

5. Skill Development

A QMD should contribute to your personal growth, enhancing your mountain skills and knowledge. You should experience something new, you should learn something new.

6. Judgement and Decision-Making

You’ll need to assess risks, adapt to changing conditions, and make sound decisions throughout the day. You should be, mostly, calling the shots all day long.

7. Duration of Five Hours or More

The day must involve a minimum of five hours of journeying. Shorter outings or quick practice sessions typically won’t qualify. Journeying IS subjective – if you have a decent walk but are practicing your navigation loads, you’ll probably walk a bit slower and cover a bit less distance.

Why Meeting the Criteria Matters

The updated guidelines for QMDs are stricter than in the past, emphasising – thorough preparation and meaningful experiences that contribute to learning and development.

Days that don’t meet all the criteria – such as revisiting a familiar mountain, practicing navigation on a quick hike, or completing a shorter walk—are unlikely to count.

A Word of Caution

Some assessors take a more hardline approach, checking through logbooks carefully to make sure that your QMD’s are QMD’s.

An assessor is MUCH more likely to scrutinise individual log book entries if your log book is sparsely populated without much information about each day out.

If you’ve only got 41 Quality Mountain Days in your log book, and your entries aren’t very detailed, your assessor will almost certainly ask for more info.

An assessor might reject a day if the journey’s duration falls short of five hours, even by a small margin. To avoid problems (and frustration) , aim to exceed the minimum requirements and make sure your logbook is up to date, accurate and detailed.

Approved Areas for Quality Mountain Days

Not all areas qualify as suitable locations for QMDs. Recognized mountainous regions include:

Eryri (Snowdonia)

The Lake District

The Scottish Highlands

While other areas, such as the Berwynion, Yorkshire Dales, and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), may offer valuable experiences, they don’t always meet the criteria for ‘mountainous’ terrain as defined by the Mountain Leader Award.

If in doubt – consult your assessor or training provider.

Tips for Aspiring Mountain Leaders

1. Logbook Preparation

Keep a detailed and accurate logbook. Include specifics such as location, duration, conditions, and key decisions made. Sharing your logbook with your assessor before the assessment can help identify any potential issues (ask for feedback before assessment).

2. Plan Varied Experiences

Explore different regions and areas to broaden your skills. While walks in areas that your familiar with or that are easy to get to might be great – venturing into areas further afield will provide a more challenging experience that’ll help enhance your learning.

3. Stay Updated

Guidelines for QMDs evolve over time. Regularly review the latest information from Mountain Training to ensure your days meet current standards.

Final Thoughts

By meeting the criteria and embracing new challenges, you’ll progress towards your Mountain Leader Award AND become more skilled and confident in the hills.

Plan your next adventure, explore new mountains, and make every day in the hills count.

Preparation is key – a detailed and diverse logbook is one of your best tools on the journey to becoming a Mountain Leader.

Have you ever thought about joining a Mountain Rescue team?

Mountain Rescue Teams provide a search and rescue service in mountainous and other remote, hard to reach areas of the UK.

Civilian Mountain Rescue Teams are entirely voluntary – reliant on donations and fundraising, they can be called out day or night, in all conditions, 365 days a year.

Being part of a Mountain Rescue team is an excellent thing to do – it’s incredibly rewarding and it feels great to be part of the Mountain Rescue community.

Mountain Rescue team members live in, or very close, to a team’s working area.

If you live in an area with mountains, moorland or wild and remote places you’ll probably have a Mountain Rescue team close to you.

If you don’t live in a mountainous area you might consider joining a lowland search and rescue team.

Why Join a Mountain Rescue Team?

Being part of a Mountain Rescue team is an incredibly rewarding experience.

The work you do as a part of a Mountain Rescue team will save lives and make people safer in the mountains.

Mountain Rescue teams are brilliant communities, you’ll be working with good people to do something meaningful.

Mountain Rescue teams get lots of training – you’ll build skills and confidence in the great outdoors.

You’ll be part of a wider community of rescue agencies that work together – Police, Coastguard, Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance.

How to Find and Join a Mountain Rescue Team

Google and social media are great tools to find your closest team, spend time doing some research – get a feel for how busy the team is.

Search social media feeds for posts about recruiting new team members – your local team may be actively recruiting.

Contact the team through email and social media messaging – say who you are and tell them that you’d like to be a team member. Include a little information about the relevant skills and experience you already have.

Wait. Teams are managed and administered by volunteers, it might take a while for them to respond to you.

If you don’t hear anything after a few weeks, give the team a gentle nudge, remind them you’d like to join.

The team will reply – they will probably ask you to attend an initial, informal, meeting – or they may give you date for the next planned round of recruitment.

Joining a Mountain Rescue Team – The Process

Once you followed the steps above you’ll probably be invited to an informal meeting with a few team members, that meeting will be really friendly, you might chat about your motivation for joining, fitness and relevant skills and experience.

If you like the people you meet, and they like you, you’ll normally join the team as an ‘aspirant member’.

Aspirant team members attend training but do not attend ‘call outs’, being an aspirant is a chance to get to know the team – and for them to get to know you.

After a few months as an aspirant team member – if you like the team, and they like you, you will be invited to be become a ‘trainee team member’.

Trainee team members attend training and call outs, you’ll be issued some essential equipment and given access to a teams call out and team management systems.

While you’re a trainee most teams will expect you to attend a minimum number of training sessions and call outs – it can be quite a commitment.

After a significant period of time as a trainee, usually at least 12 months, and lots of training – you may be invited to become a full team member.

As a full team member your Mountain Rescue journey really gets started – more experience, more training, more time getting to know your team.

Moel Hebog Walk in Winter

What Experience and Skills Do I Need to Join a Mountain Rescue Team?

Mountain Rescue is physically and mentally demanding, you’ll need to be able to move around in the mountains, carrying a heavy pack, in all weathers.

You’ll need to be able to keep your cool, follow instruction and work as part of a team in situations that can be stressful.

You’ll need to have enough empathy, self awareness and resilience to look after your own mental health – and help look after your team.

Mountain Rescue teams sometimes deal with traumatic injury and death.

You should already be confident navigating in the kind of terrain teams operate in – mountains, moorland and remote areas.

The ability to work closely with others in challenging conditions is critical.

Experience of climbing, rope work and winter hill skills are a big plus.

What Commitment Do I Need to Make to Join a Mountain Rescue Team?

Joining a Mountain Rescue team is a big responsibility. You’ll need to:

Attend Regular Training: Most teams train weekly, with additional weekends and specialist courses for more advanced or in depth courses.

Help Fundraise: Mountain Rescue is voluntary, teams rely on fundraising. Expect to attend events and help raise awareness whenever you can.

Is Mountain Rescue Voluntary in the UK?

Yes – Mountain Rescue in the UK is entirely voluntary.

What is a Wild Swimming Weekend

A wild swimming weekend can be the perfect way to escape the everyday grind and immerse yourself in nature. It’s all about exploring natural swimming spots, connecting with other nice humans, and learning to safely enjoy swimming in the great outdoors.

Wild swimming weekends are usually guided experiences that mix swimming with exploring and hillwalking. They’re designed for everyone – from beginners looking to dip their toes into open water to more experienced swimmers looking for new places to swim.

Why Should You Try Wild Swimming?

Wild swimming is more than just a swim, it’s an adventure, here’s why you should give it a go…

Connect with nature: You’ll explore some beautiful landscapes and feel a unique connection to nature.

Boost your health: Swimming outdoors improves endurance, circulation, and mental health, with cold water releasing endorphins and reducing inflammation.

Challenge yourself: Open water is unpredictable, making every swim a new and exciting experience.

Emma’s Top Tips – How to Predict a Cloud Inversion in the UK.

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of climbing through the clag, only to break through to brilliant views of peaks rising as islands above a sea of clouds.

This magical sight, called a cloud inversion, is rare but worth chasing. With the right knowledge, a bit of luck, and good planning, you can increase your chances of experiencing one in the UK.

Here’s what you need to know to predict a cloud inversion and enjoy this breathtaking phenomenon safely…

What Is a Cloud Inversion in the UK?

A cloud inversion, also called a temperature inversion, happens when the usual weather pattern flips, with warmer air trapping cooler air below. In the UK, they often appear in valleys or near water sources during autumn, winter, and early spring.

As the sun rises, moisture from lakes or rivers evaporates, cooling and condensing into mist. When the warm air layer above prevents it from rising, the mist thickens into a sea of cloud. Climbing above this layer reveals incredible views, with peaks breaking through the cloud like islands.

What’s the Best Weather to Predict a Cloud Inversion?

Cloud inversions occur when colder air near the ground is trapped under a layer of warmer air, often during high-pressure weather. This “temperature inversion” creates the perfect setup for mist and cloud to form below higher elevations.

Key Weather Conditions for Cloud Inversions

High Pressure: Look for a long-lasting high-pressure system, which stabilizes the air and creates the calm conditions needed for inversions.

Cool Nights: Clear, cold nights allow the ground to cool quickly, encouraging the formation of mist and cloud.

Moist Ground: Recent rain or nearby lakes, rivers, or valleys can add moisture, increasing the chances of low clouds forming.

Check weather forecasts like MWIS (Mountain Weather Information Service) or the Met Office Mountain Forecast for predictions of inversion conditions, including the height of cloud layers.

Round-Up: How to Predict a Cloud Inversion in the UK

Check Weather Forecasts: Look for high pressure, calm conditions, and predicted cloud layers.

Focus on Moisture: Areas with rivers, lakes, or recent rain are ideal.

Choose Prominent Peaks: Get as high up as you can, if you’re in Wales aim for 3000ft peaks.

Be Patient: It might take a few attempts, but the reward is worth it!

Best Time of Day for a Cloud Inversion

Cloud inversions are most common in the early morning, just after sunrise. Nights cool the air near the ground, creating ideal conditions for low cloud. Heading out before dawn increases your chances of catching the clouds before they burn off in the sun’s warmth.

Brocken Spectres and Cloud Inversions

A real bonus when chasing cloud inversions is the chance to see a Brocken Spectre.

Emma’s Top Tips – What to Wear Wild Swimming.

Are you ready to jump into wild swimming but wondering what to wear? Wild swimming is getting more and more popular as a way to connect with the great outdoors and offers fantastic physical and mental health benefits.

Knowing what to wear can be tricky, especially with so many gear options.

So we decided to put together a guide that covers everything from swimsuits to accessories.

What You Wear Wild Swimming

Swimming outdoors, in wild places like rivers, lakes, or the sea, means you’ll be dealing with a variety of conditions – underfoot and in the water.

The water will be colder, there will be currents and you WILL encounter mud, rocks and plants.

Your choice of clothing should help you stay comfortable, warm, and safe – let’s look at some essentials.

Wild Swimwear

Swimsuit or Wetsuit?

One of the first things you’ll need to decide is whether to wear a swimsuit or a wetsuit.

Swimsuits – Perfect for warmer days, a one-piece swimsuit or swim shorts can be great options. They allow for easy movement, but they don’t provide any extra warmth. Bikinis are fine but make sure they’re robust and that you have both bits of your bikini with you.

Wetsuits – Ideal if you’re swimming in colder water or planning to stay in the water for longer. Wetsuits offer insulation, they help maintain your body temperature,

Wetsuits can restrict movement slightly. For colder months or colder waters, look for a wetsuit with a thickness of 2-3 mm for the best balance of warmth and flexibility.

Wild Swimming Accessories

Swimming Cap (or wooly hat)

A swimming cap (or wooly hat) helps keep your body heat in, especially in chilly waters. A brightly coloured swim cap also increases your visibility, which can keep you a bit safer.

Swimming Shoes

For rocky or uneven ground, swimming shoes protect your feet and provide extra grip. These can prevent cuts and make getting in and out of the water loads more comfortable.

Tow Float

A tow float is a popular wild swimming accessory that can serve two purposes…

It increases your visibility in the water and acts as a waterproof storage bag for valuables like your phone or keys – keeping your phone close enough and DRY is important, especially in wild places.

Staying Warm

Once you’re out of the water, it’s important to warm up quickly, these things can really help.

Towel or Changing Robe: A large towel or water-resistant changing robe makes drying off easier, and a changing robe can keep you warm while you move around and get changed.

Extra Layers: Socks, a hat, and gloves can help warm you up, even on a sunny day. Cold water can chill you more than expected, so bringing a few cozy layers is a good idea.

A Flask: Something warm to drink makes a difference to how quickly you’ll feel warm – it’s also a great way of getting some sugar on board.

Different Conditions

Cold Tolerance and Personal Preference

Everyone’s tolerance for cold is different. Don’t feel pressured to ‘tough it out’ if you get chilly easily.

A wetsuit, along with neoprene gloves and socks might be just what you need.

If you feel more comfortable in a simple swimsuit, that’s fine too.

Focus on what makes YOU comfortable and don’t worry about what other people are wearing.

Consider the Type of Swim

For a quick dip, you might not need much gear beyond a swimsuit.

But for longer swims, some extra insulation, like a wetsuit or thermal rash vest, can help.

If you’re swimming during winter or colder days, consider gloves and socks to protect your hands and feet.

FAQs About What to Wear Wild Swimming

What type of wetsuit is best for wild swimming?

A wetsuit with a thickness of 2-3 mm provides a good balance of warmth and flexibility.

Look for a wetsuit with added flexibility around the shoulders to allow for easy movement while swimming.

Can I wear regular swimwear for wild swimming?

Yes, a swimsuit is fine, especially in warmer conditions. Just be aware that it won’t provide insulation, so limit your time in the water if you start to feel cold.

Should I use a tow float when I’m Wild Swimming?

A tow float improves visibility and can store valuables like keys and a phone safely. It’s especially helpful in areas where boats or other swimmers may be around.

Is wild swimming in Wales safe?

Yes, Wales offers many beautiful wild swimming spots, but always check water conditions and local guidelines. Joining a local wild swimming group can help you learn the safest places and practices.

Or book a guide – we can take groups of up to 10 people swimming for £25 per person.

Wearing Darn Tough Socks

Some friends of ours really loved Darn Tough Socks and convinced us that we needed some as well.

Darn Tough Socks are not cheap – we probably needed the ‘lifetime guarantee’ to convince us to buy some.

Darn Tough Socks are fun to look at, they have loads of cool designs – from ‘standard’ hill walking to jazzy patterns and colours.

We think Darn Tough Socks are a little warmer than other socks – the knit seems a bit denser, they feel like they’ll last a long time but you might consider wearing ‘lighter’ socks than you might usually.

We have some strange shaped feet in our Mountain Rescue team and everyone is really happy with the fit and comfort.

Durability, Quality, Sustainability

Darn Tough Socks are still (all) made in Vermont in the USA – traceability will never be an issue.

Darn Tough ONLY make socks – socks centred around “Comfort, Durability, and Fit, ensuring your socks offer the highest quality for life, and every day after”.

The socks tighten up a bit after a cool machine wash = but they soon relax again

They NEVER sag or lose calf traction.

The socks are guaranteed for LIFE, which (we think) means you might never need to buy another pair of socks ever again.

https://darntough.uk/pages/our-unconditional-lifetime-guarantee

“If these aren’t the longest lasting socks you’ve ever owned, you can return them to us for another pair”.

Technical Stuff

Darn Tough Socks are knitted from Merino Wool.

Merino Wool is the world’s most versatile performance fabric. It comes from high-elevation areas in New Zealand and Australia where Merino sheep run wild.

Under a microscope, merino fibres measure half as thick as human hairs but are twice as resilient, capable of being twisted up to 20,000 times without breaking.

The inherent power of Merino Wool is its ability to stretch, thanks to natural crimps in its fibres. These creases, or folds, coil together to create Merino Wool’s elastic-like core, giving it a reflexive memory that snaps back into place during and after rigorous activity.

Compared to other sock materials – Merino Wool is used because its wildly durable, temperature regulating, and silky smooth on your skin.

Darn Tough Socks – Company and Values

“To make the world’s best socks, here in Vermont, USA, and stand behind them unconditionally.
